Coursework

Course Title Credits Prerequisite Catalog Description
Required Core Courses (16 credits)
OT 692* Occupation and Rehabilitation Science Seminar I 2 Historical and contemporary legislative, theoretical, scientific, and social foundations that influenced the development of rehabilitation science and occupational science. Evaluation of and scholarly discourse on human performance and participation research. Construction of an integrated research philosophy based upon historical and contemporary foundations of occupational science and rehabilitation science, human performance and participation research, and other related sciences.
OT 792** Occupation and Rehabilitation Science Seminar II 2 Evaluate how historical, legislative, social, scientific, and theoretical influences shape(d) a chosen human performance and participation research topic and synthesize contributions from rehabilitation science, occupational science, and other multidisciplinary sciences and research. Facilitate a scholarly discourse within a community of scholars. Engage in self-directed learning to refine and defend scholarly perspective and integrated research philosophy.
OT 701 Occupation and Rehabilitation Science III 3 Investigation of the intersection of occupational science and rehabilitation science research situated in various paradigms.
*OT 692 will be taken twice for a total of 4 credits.
**OT 792 will be taken 3 times, for a total of 6 credits
Research Core Requirements (18 credits)
OT 735 or equivalent Research Process I 3 Become proficient in locating evidence to inform, guide, and support the occupational therapy process. Accurately appraise evidence in relation to clinical questions as the context for learning quantitative and qualitative research methods, design, and analysis.
OT 745 or equivalent Research Process II 3 OT 735 Develop basic skills for ethically generating evidence to inform and/or evaluate the impact of an OT’s practice
OT 699 or 786* Thesis
Research Practicum
9 Individualized opportunity for research experience(s)
Advanced Research 3 credits in an advanced quantitative or qualitative research course 3
*The Research Practicum (OT 786) is meant to provide the student with an individualized opportunity for research experience working directly and closely with a faculty member. Credits associated with OT 786 may be counted toward Research Core Requirements (up to 9 credits) and/or as elective credits. Importantly, measurable learning objectives must be established between the faculty member and student when registering for OT 786.
Example objectives for OT 786 may be centered on: learning specialized research techniques, manuscript preparation, grant proposal preparation, etc. If a student elects to register for OT 786 on multiple instances, she/he is encouraged to seek out a variety of research experiences. When a student will complete learning activities that do not involve direct and close work with a faculty member, she/he should register for Independent Study credits (OT 794) versus OT 786. Independent study is considered study that a student independently completes to meet some deliverable or expectation. The student collaborates with a faculty member to establish the deliverable or expectations, meets regularly to discuss and monitor progress, and is evaluated by the faculty member regarding satisfactory completion and/or performance. Example independent study activities might include: in-depth literature review on a topic, generating an abstract and poster for a conference, self-study in a content area important to understanding some phenomenon (e.g., anatomy, behaviorism), etc.
Academic Career Core Requirements (4 to 6 credits)
OT 710 Teaching Occupation and Rehabilitation Science* 3 Design and implementation of teaching and learning philosophies and approaches in occupation and rehabilitation contexts
HDFS 592 Grant Writing-Human Services & Research 3 STAT 201 Writing grant proposals that support client services or for research
*Students who elect to take “Supervised College Teaching” (SCT) credits are encouraged to be simultaneously enrolled in OT 710 Teaching Occupation and Rehabilitation Science, or to have previously completed OT 710. Note, however, that the instructor teaching OT 710 is not the de facto instructor on record for SCT. Students should therefore work with the instructor who is supervising them in their SCT to be the instructor on record for SCT credits. For example, PhD student “Mary” is completing her SCT experience by teaching a portion of “Dr. Jones” pediatrics course, under his supervision. Mary is concurrently enrolled in “Dr. Smith’s” OT 710 course. When registering for SCT credits, Mary would collaborate with Dr. Jones to ensure he is the instructor of record for SCT. Although Dr. Smith’s OT 710 course would help facilitate Mary’s training and performance for teaching, Dr. Smith would not be responsible for supervising Mary’s SCT. The student’s advisor may also serve as a secondary source of guidance in the SCT.
Elective Requirements (18 to 21 credits)
18-20 credits of electives Credits selected with approval of committee from following Departments/units: Occupational Therapy, Anthropology, Biomedical Science, Computer Science, Human Development and Family Studies, Neurobiology, Psychology, School of Education, School of Social Work, etc
Dissertation Requirements (15 credits)
OT 799* Dissertation 15
*In general, a student will not register for dissertation credits until passing the qualifying exam – the point at which the student is formally considered a “doctoral candidate." Exceptions may be made with approval of the student’s doctoral committee.

The number of dissertation credits for which a student registers should align with the amount of actual work completed during the semester. Suggested credit ranges for dissertation activities follow. The intention of providing these guidelines is to assist the PhD Student and mentor in establishing expectations for dissertation-related work to be completed during semester.
Activity/suggested credits:

• Collection/analysis of pilot data to support proposal: 1-3 credits
• Proposal write up: 3 credits
• Data collection/analysis: 3-6 credits
• Dissertation write-up: 3-6 credits
