7 Word – Lists

Overview

When creating lists, whether numbered or bulleted, always use Word’s built-in list features. This provides the coded structure necessary for assistive technology users to understand the list information.

Important Notes

  • Avoid manually styling lists (e.g., typing “1.” or using hyphens for bullets) as screen readers won’t recognize them as lists.
  • For bulleted lists, use Word’s default bullet types (circle, open circle, and square). These are the only bullets correctly coded for assistive technology.

Walk-through

Format Lists

  1. Navigate to the Home tab on the Ribbon.
  2. Select either the Numbering or Bullets button.
  3. A list will appear; enter your content.
  4. To add sub-levels (indent a list item), hit Enter to generate the next bullet, then hit Tab.
